Jamie and Ruth spent a sunny morning at our completed conservation project of the A-Listed Palm Houses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as part of the Women in Property Scotland event hosted by Victoria Kirk of Atkins Réalis.
Jamie, Conservation Architect and Director responsible for the project, spoke about the approach taken to the conservation and the balance between retaining original fabric and restoring original appearance. The thousands of panes of special curved, UV-transmitting, laminated glass were individually templated. Many of the ironwork repairs are invisible so even Jamie struggles to spot them.
Fiona Inches, Glasshouse Manager at RBGE, spoke about their remarkable work in moving the plants out of the Palm Houses for the duration of the works, and the satisfaction of returning “old friends” to the Palm Houses on completion.
Everyone was impressed by the scale of the replanting and how beautifully it relates to the restored buildings.
Many thanks to Katie Hall for arranging such a wonderful event.
