This year Scottish Housing Day is encouraging people to think about how the housing sector can better support people in later life, as their needs and priorities change.
Since 2000, the number of people aged 65+ in Scotland has increased by a third with the last census, 2022, indicating there are now over one million people aged 65 and over. This is over a quarter of a million higher than the number of people under 15.
Therefore, the need to design homes that better suit an aging population is high.
More housing, like our project at Longniddry South, is required to cater for older people. This multiple award-winning development created a range of dwellings for affordable rent, specifically designed for older people and to assist those living with dementia. The creation of a large, shared courtyard space, helps to create a sheltered area that encourages social interaction between residents, reducing potential loneliness and social isolation.
