The National Museum of Scotland masterplan phase 4 ‘Revealing Cultures’ project was the final part of the conservation and redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland, creating three fascinating and engaging new galleries on the top floor of the nationally-significant Category A Listed building on Chambers Street.
The project was funded by the Scottish Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Our designs involved the redevelopment of three existing spaces, which were fitted out to a ‘shell’ specification during an earlier phase of the masterplan. New entrances were created to seamlessly connect the new exhibitions to the adjacent main museum galleries, with new flooring, wall and ceiling finishes. We were responsible for the management of all aspects of the project, ensuring the base-build works, the services fitout and the exhibition design were coordinated within the existing building, which was open to the public as usual whilst the works were ongoing.
We acted as architect, design team leader, contract administrator and principal designer, working closely with our clients, and alongside London-based ZMMA Architects, who were responsible for the exhibition design of the galleries.
The new galleries opened to the public in Spring 2019 and provide innovative exhibitions showcasing Ancient Egypt, East Asia and World Cultures collections. They have been very successful additions to the museum exhibitions programme.
