This multiple award-winning development on the edge of Longniddry has created a range of new dwellings for affordable rent, which are specifically designed for older people and to assist those living with dementia. The project was designed in accordance with the Longniddry Development Masterplan and employs the East Lothian, Garden City architectural style to create a traditional aesthetic.
The key characteristic of the proposed development is the arrangement of dwellings to form a large shared courtyard space. This creates a sheltered area that encourages social interaction between residents and helps to reduce potential loneliness and social isolation. This strategy is strengthened by placing quieter rooms such as bedrooms to the outer pedestrian lanes, allowing living rooms and kitchens to overlook the courtyard and contribute to the activity and life at the centre of the development.
The majority of dwellings include patios or private balconies allowing tenants to move between the internal and external environments directly from their main living areas. Open plan living spaces mean way finding is carried out with relative ease within the home and allows increased daylighting within the internal spaces.
This distinct group of homes benefit from easy access to mature open space, community facilities in the nearby steading, the Longniddry village facilities and the train station.
