In response to a growing local population, Kirkliston Primary School needed to increase its capacity from 360 to over 500 pupils. As the biggest change to the school since it was built, the new extension gives it a new public face. To ensure the continuous operation of the school, the works had to be carefully designed and phased.
The extension has been designed in two wings; the first provides eight new classrooms around a central shared hub space, and the second provides a new gym and dining hall. Opportunities for children to play, be outdoors, and engage in sporting activities have been delivered through the provision of an all-weather games area, a bespoke adventure play area, and outdoor teaching areas.
To help the school get flexible use out of the space, a folding wall was designed in to allow the halls to combine into an assembly space. The benefits of using natural materials within educational settings were realised through the use of timber within the external canopy and as acoustic panelling internally, adding warmth to the school’s major spaces.
Parents, caregivers and educators can take pride in this new facility which helps the children of Kirkliston learn and flourish.
