Project overview

Home to the world’s only rotating boat lift, the Falkirk Wheel is one of Scotland’s most remarkable engineering landmarks and a major visitor destination. Our ambitious, multi-strand retrofit and refurbishment project will transform the overall visitor experience while supporting Scottish Canals on its transition to net zero.

A redesigned entrance plaza will welcome visitors with new seating areas and substantial planting, giving pedestrians priority over vehicles. By relocating the main entrance and reconfiguring the visitor centre, we will improve visitor flow and comfortably accommodate increased numbers of visitors.

The visitor centre itself will undergo a fabric-first retrofit, including new non-combustible zinc cladding and increased insulation to enhance thermal performance and reduce energy demand. A subtle two-tone diamond pattern of zinc shingles will accentuate the building’s striking double-curved form, set against simpler vertical zinc cladding on the flat elevations.
