As part of their homebuilding framework, Berwickshire Housing Association’s ambition is to develop high quality sustainable homes in semi-rural settings which will help reduce fuel poverty. We have helped them in this aim by developing standard house types which offer the flexibility to be used across a range of sites, and have led a multi-discipline team to provide comprehensive design services to the client across these sites.
Street and building layouts were carefully designed to take account of existing conditions and context, preserving existing trees, and maximising the potential for solar gain and views. We designed a flexible mixture of 1-4 bedroom house and cottage flat types that were able to be deployed on each site to suit the client requirements.
The house types were designed to have enough continuity to be recognised as the client’s housing stock, with enough variation in the elevational treatment and materials to suit different sites.
The homes benefit from private garden space and were designed to the Scottish Government’s ‘Greener Homes’ standard which provided enhanced insulation, improved window and door specifications, and air source heat pumps for heating.
Housing tenants benefit from lower energy costs in their new homes, which sit within well considered and attractive streets.
