WATSON'S CENTRE FOR SPORT
Location: Colinton, Edinburgh
Client: George Watson’s College
Programme: Completed 2012
The original sports complex at the school developed incrementally around a 1930s building and the entire complex has now been refurbishment to meet the changing requirements of sports teaching and to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
The key aim of the project was to provide facilities of a high contemporary standard, primarily for school use but also for after hours clubs. An overall concept was developed which could be delivered in phases, the first of which was a new-build multi-purpose sports hall complete with a viewing gallery, extensive natural light and an Olympic standard sprung sports floor (completed 2008).
The next phase of the project completed the refurbishment of the building. This included the re-structuring of the main entrance and the circulation routes through the building, the formation of an ‘Arcade’ and ‘Hub’, providing a new focus to the building and a large flexible gathering space, which also allows visitors to have views into the swimming pool. The pool itself has been completely refurbished including a new barrel-vaulted roof, new pool surround and lining.
The most spectacular spaces include a new multi-purpose gymnasium and a high quality fitness suite and weights room with a glazed wall allowing high levels of natural light and providing views towards the Pentland Hills.
