THISTLE PHASE 3, CRAIGMILLAR
Location: Edinburgh
Client: Places for People
Programme: Current Project
This proposed development of 149 dwellings is located on a brownfield site in Craigmillar, adjacent to the Thistle Foundation Conservation Area and our recently completed Tudsbery Court development.
This is the final phase of a masterplan designed by SSM for over 250 new homes for Places for People and acts as a link between existing houses in the Thistle Foundation and recent developments at Greendykes.
The scheme creates a wide mix of unit types and sizes including one, two and three-bedroom flats and two and three-bedroom houses. The units are designed to suit Social Rent, Mid-Market Rent and Shared Equity tenures. Buildings include two-storey houses, and three, four and six-storey flatted blocks.
Two new streets will be created as part of the development in addition to the upgrading of existing streets to the east and south and Designing Streets principles have been supported throughout the design development.
Materials will follow precedent set by Tudsbery Court with red and blue brick, roughcast render and a feature grey architectural brick to the six-storey block.
The high quality landscape design includes central courtyards, made up of small private gardens, larger shared space, bespoke seating and planting. Car parking is on-street and communal refuse stores will nest within the ‘garden walls’ to enable an uncluttered street design, maximising the space available for seating, street trees and planting, all set in high quality surface materials.
The development is programmed for a site start in Spring 2016.
