ST ANDREW BOATHOUSE
Location: Union Canal, Edinburgh
Client: St Andrew Boat Club
Programme: Completed 2005
St Andrew Boat Club operates out of a garage building on the edge of the Union Canal which is insufficient for the current fleet of boats, the changing facilities are basic and there is nowhere to hold social events. Proposals have been developed for a new facility.
The new building has been located to form a courtyard overlooked by the existing garage the tow path and the proposed first floor balcony.
The Boathouse contains storage for over 60 boats from skulls to eights on the ground floor. The upper floor contains changing facilities for 30 people and a multifunctional room for training and social activities. The large balcony area on the upper floor has views along the canal and overlooks the courtyard below.
The design has been inspired by upturned boat hulls. The distinctive shape allows for solar panels and rainwater harvesting, which forms part of the energy agenda for the building. Quality and cost effective materials including steel, blockwork and aluminium profiled cladding are proposed, creating an elegant industrial aesthetic.
The new building will not only provide much needed improved facilities for the Club, but will be a positive addition to the canal landscape and enhance the existing hub of sports facilities with the adjacent Boroughmuir Rugby Club and Meggetland Sports Pitches.
