MERCHISTON CAMPUS OVERCLAD
Location: Colinton Road, Edinburgh
Client: Edinburgh Napier University
Programme: Completed 2015
This project involves over cladding and general upgrading of the Colinton Road elevation and entrance area of the Merchiston Campus. The project has both an aesthetic and sustainability agenda and aims to improve and upgrade the building to reflect the high quality learning environment within.
An aluminium cladding system has been added to the elevations and entrance undercroft to modernise the aesthetics of the building and improve its thermal efficiency. This has been combined with a range of other complementary projects such as the window replacement and a series of internal upgrades as part of a significant refurbishment programme for the campus.
Enhancing the streetscape has been a key feature of this project and considered use of colour on the new window mullions combined with LED lighting within the panel system and to light the window reveals will have a positive impact on the use and perception of the campus during the evening, especially in the winter when the days are short.
The improvements to the building should have a positive impact on the student’s learning experience and it is hoped that the system will be ‘rolled out’ across the entire campus as further funding becomes available.
