HAWKHILL SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION
Location: Lochend, Edinburgh
Client: Barony Housing Association
Programme: Completed 2007
This project is located on a restricted brownfield site in the Lochend area of Edinburgh. The brief was for a small new build care facility to provide permanent supported residential accommodation.
The accommodation includes ten individual units with kitchen and en-suite toilet together with ancillary support and communal facilities. The building offers its residents the chance to live semi-private lives whilst having the backup of intensive support through a 24 hour staff presence.
The building derives its form from the linear nature of the site. The accommodation is kept tight against the existing north boundary wall with the majority of the windows and the garden area located on the south façade. Materials including facing brick and render, as well as steeply pitched roofs, are a direct response to the local vernacular.
The existing site has a history of anti-social problems and the removal of an existing footpath at the edge of the site led to an improvement in security not only for the site, but also for the local residents.
