EASTERHOUSE TOWN CENTRE ACTION PLAN
Location: Easterhouse, Glasgow
Client: RPS for Glasgow City Council
Programme: Completed 2007
SSM was part of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals led by the RPS Group. The purpose of the study was to produce a Town Centre Action Plan for the wider Easterhouse area. The requirement for a plan was identified in Glasgow City Plan 1. Although the study related strongly to the residential area of Easterhouse, it also incorporates substantial community and retail developments to the west of Easterhouse.
The study area covered a diverse range of uses from the Glasgow Fort to the Shandwick Centre, including Auchinlea Park and The Bridge community facility. The project team carried out a comprehensive analysis of the area, including community and stakeholder workshops and produced proposals for how to create a coherent town centre.
The challenge of this study was to develop a physical response to meeting the requirements of a car-orientated regional retail complex, while enhancing a local neighbourhood facility and to create an attractive, pedestrian-friendly shopping environment. In order to test the robustness of the plan and provide more detailed guidance on the physical and implementation proposal, a development framework was produced as one possible method of taking forward the town centre. The Action Plan was presented to Glasgow City Council and adopted as Supplementary Planning Advice for the area.
