CHURCH HILL DENTAL SURGERY
Location: Morningside, Edinburgh
Client: Mr Ian Tunnah
Programme: Completed 2014
The aim of this project was to create a vibrant, active frontage to a busy shopping area in Church Hill, Morningside whilst trying to provide the necessary accommodation and privacy required by a dental surgery.
The design was prepared in accordance with NHS Dental Surgery standards following the Scottish Health Planning Note 3 for converting a surgery within a listed building. We developed the design with the assistance of a specialist dental surgery and decontamination room suppliers to provide the appropriate space planning, M&E interfacing and specification of rooms exposed to high quantities of radiation. We worked with the client to obtain approvals from the regional NHS Architect prior to submitting statutory approvals.
Internally the space was re-organised to provide one dental surgery with supporting clinical rooms, staff facilities and a waiting area. Bright accents of colour were used throughout to provide an animated interior.
The category B listed shop front was freshened up with a coat of varnish and invigorated with translucent and opaque graphic films in response to the degree of privacy required. The graphic films show the roof tops and spires of the Church Hill area in Morningside looking towards the Pentlands. This references the name of the practice and sets a fresh calming precedent for the atmosphere within the surgery.
