CASTLEBRAE FOOTBALL PAVILION
Location: Craigmillar, Edinburgh
Client: PARC Craigmillar Ltd
Programme: Current Project
As part of the regeneration of Craigmillar, PARC are intending to install a new all weather football pitch adjacent to Castlebrae Community School. Part of this project involves the building of a new pavillion to contain changing facilities, storage and a club room. The site is on the green-belt and the response to this requirement has produced a distinctive but low key building which provides a direct response to its functional requirements.
The plan was developed to reduce the requirement for circulation space, whilst the possibility of vandalism led to the development of the building’s unusual profile. All doors and windows are located on one side of the building where they can be monitored, with the other side comprising a steeply sloped metal wall and roof. The doors are secured by rolling shutters carefully integrated into the design of the external cladding.
The sustainability agenda is a high priority for the building design. A number of environmental issues are being considered such as the use of a ground source heat pump, photovoltaic panels and the possible incorporation of wind turbines adjacent to the floodlighting columns.
This will be a highly functional but distinctive building which will provide a dramatic, lively and engaging sports facility.
