We have obtained Planning Permission on behalf of Scottish Canals for the retrofit and refurbishment of the Visitor Centre at the Falkirk Wheel, one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions and the world’s only rotating boat lift. Our multi-strand project will enhance the visitor experience while supporting Scottish Canals’ transition to net zero.
A redesigned entrance plaza will welcome visitors with new seating areas and substantial planting, giving pedestrians priority over vehicles. By relocating the main entrance and reconfiguring the visitor centre we will improve visitor flow and comfortably accommodate increased numbers of visitors.
The visitor centre itself will undergo a fabric-first retrofit, including new non-combustible zinc cladding and increased insulation to enhance thermal performance and reduce energy demand. A subtle two-tone diamond pattern of zinc shingles will accentuate the building’s striking double-curved form, set against simpler vertical zinc cladding on the flat elevations.
