Yesterday we were delighted to show invited guests, friends and colleagues around our completed Palm Houses conservation project at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
Director and Conservation Architect Jamie, who has led the project since 2018, gave an interesting and amusing insight into the process of restoration, which included nearly 6000 new panes of glass, restoration of the cast iron structure, and stonework repairs, including the replacement of an external cornice removed in the 1960s. This is the most comprehensive restoration of the Category A listed Palm Houses since the front range was completed in 1858, incorporating the smaller octagonal Palm House built in 1834, and will allow the buildings to continue to function as a visitor attraction and important research building for many decades to come.
Our guests were given the chance to see the newly planted Palm Houses ahead of their public reopening in October.
