Stranraer Harbourmaster’s Office Commended at the Dumfries & Galloway Design Awards.
One of the key buildings of Stranraer’s Waterfront is the former Harbourmaster’s Office, a prominent landmark beside Stranraer harbour. It is a stylish Listed building from the 1930s, the only surviving inter-war industrial building in the town and one of the few Art Deco buildings in the region. The building had lain empty for several years and was deteriorating rapidly.
In 2019 we converted and extended the building to form a new Harbour Centre for use by local businesses and organisations to promote water-based activities and tourism. The project was funded by both the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grants Fund and @Historic Environment Scotland’s Conservation and Regeneration Scheme (CARS). In addition to the extension, we implemented a full programme of conservation works to the existing building. Outside, we created a new public space, with seating and planting chosen to survive in a marine environment, to enhance the setting of the Listed building and strengthens the connection between the town and the sea. The extended building now provides a welcoming gateway to the marina and harbour and contributes to Stranraer’s economic revival.
We are pleased that this modest yet impactful project has been recognised with a Commendation in the category of Conversion and Extension to a Building.
