Turkish Energy Efficiency Conservation Project

Smith Scott Mullan Associates are delighted to be appointed to act as Energy Efficiency Advisors by Edinburgh World Heritage on their project within the Mardin Cultural Landscape site. We will be working with utilising the knowledge and expertise of local architects and conservation specialists from the Mardin Museum and the Conservation Research Centre of the Dicle University in Diyarbakır. The project aims to deliver an exemplar refurbishment of one of the ancient stone houses in line with demanding conservation principles and at the same time responding to the ambitious energy efficiency standards required. The expectation is that the project will be used as a know-how source for local property owners for other refurbishments in the Mardin Cultural Landscape area.

SSM Inaugural Golf Day

Smith Scott Mullan Associates were delighted to welcome clients, consultants and colleagues for their inaugural Golf outing on 5th October 2018. Duddingston Golf Course provided the stunning backdrop along with the warm autumn sun for what proved to be an engaging afternoon with a light mixture of business and pleasure. The event provided challenges to all but there were plenty of good shots played on the day!

Congratulations to David, Alistair, Grant and Rick for winning the team trophy and to the individual prize winners.

We look forward to next year’s event!

SSM Annual Beach BBQ

SSM once again braved the elements for this years annual BBQ. Lady luck was not on our side this year the weather just did not want to play ball! However, everyone had a great time and team building at its finest was seen. Think we will change the event back to June next year were we will be hopefully able loose the jumpers and coats!

New Publication – VIRTUS

We have been working closely with Crovetti Associates on the creation and publication of VIRTUS journal, which includes articles on housing and off-site construction by SSM Directors Eugene Mullan and Rick McCluggage. The review is dedicated to the Build Environment, its contempory issues, urgencies, best practice and its people.

VIRTUS is the result of a collaboration with several well-known practices, organisations and professionals through out our industry.

The Saltire Society Housing Design Awards 2018

Rick McCluggage was delighted to receive on behalf SSM the Commendation by The Saltire Society for our Multiple Dwelling at Fortune Place, Moredun Edinburgh. Rick received the award along our partners on the project Castle Rock Edinvar (Heather MacNaughton), part of the Places for People Group. The development sought to provide a new model of housing that enables older people to maintain their independence in their community.

The objective of Fortune Place was to provide “a thriving community where people feel supported, have safe access to the outdoors and are connected to their families, neighbourhoods, facilities and services.”

How do we support independent living for older people?

SSM were delighted to work with Castle Rock Edinvar in producing a publication on “Learning from Fortune Place”. This project was commenced nearly three years ago and has had a comprehensive piece of “in use” research which spoke to a wide range of residents and stakeholders. The feedback was very positive!

The publication was launched at the Holyrood – Older People Housing Conference on June 12th where a presentation was given by Eugene Mullan (SSM) and Heather MacNaughton (Castle Rock Edinvar). Copies of the publication can be provided.

SSM Do Tough Mudder

After a few months of fund raising the time was upon the team to take on the Tough Mudder 2018 challenge for McMillan Cancer Support on Saturday 16th June. This charity is close to our SSM family as it has been great support to our Practice Manager through her ongoing battle with Breast Cancer. The work of the McMillan Cancer Support staff is second to none and helps so many family, friends and the wider reaching network of colleagues suffering from this awful disease every single day and it was a pleasure to give a little back. Sixteen brave staff rallying from the front raised at magnificent £5,250 through very kind donations from family, friends, consultants and clients and we thank you all for your support. As you can see we enjoyed every minute of the challenge apart from the “how did the mud get there” after the event.

SSM Living Wage Employer

We are proud to renew our accreditation as a Living Wage employer it’s our responsibility through example, incentive and cultural change to help change lives. The Living Wage is an independent movement of businesses, organisations and people who believe a fair day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.

We again hosted our annual Jazz night on Thursday 22nd March 2018. It was a delightful spring evening in our Leith studio with over 120 clients, consultants and colleagues. We enjoyed great company, great conversation and a warm message of connection. Already we are looking forward to next years event.

Shop Front Conservation

Our conservation of an Art-Nouveau shopfront to a café in Stockbridge looks fabulous in its new colours. Many people will be familiar with the café under its former name of Maxi’s. Owners Noel and Rebecca had previously carried out some interesting conservation work on the interior, artfully revealling damaged tiles remaining from its previous use as a fish shop, and this project, part-funded by Edinburgh World Heritage, completes the works to the premises.

The project has rescued some unusual stained glass which was in danger of collapsing into the street. The huge sash-and-case windows had rotted beyond the point of repair, but were replaced with exact replicas and fitted with the original stained glass. Missing mouldings were replaced and a pair of handsome new doors, specially designed by us, complete the composition.

The new colour scheme shows off the shopfront to its best, highlighting the low-relief floral motifs in gold paint to add a bit of sparkle.
