About us / Sustainability

Sustainability at our core

For us, there is no architecture without sustainability; we cannot enhance lives through design without taking care of both people and planet. Our commitment to sustainable principles runs far beyond meeting legislative standards, it’s about anticipating the future, exceeding best practice, and it’s about the way we run our own business. It’s woven through our values and is evident in every project we undertake.

A commitment to Passive House

Passive House has fast become a new industry standard and our passion for it began several years ago. As well as our six Certified Passive House Designers, our two most recently completed Passive House projects ensure we have the real world experience our clients need.

Both projects, Buccleuch and Burnbrae, are amongst Scotland’s first completed social housing Passive House projects. They are both prime examples of social sustainability, creating new energy efficient homes along with new and renovated local shops which help strengthen their neighbourhoods.

We understand that for clients Passive House projects can feel overwhelming. Our commitment to the process and understanding of how Passive House works within a wider sustainability framework ensures we can be a guiding light through this exciting design methodology.

Intuitively sustainable

Our in-house sustainability experts ensure that best practice is embedded into our thinking and processes, so when we put pen to paper, sustainable design is intuitive. We carry out early stage reviews against the client’s requirements to help address the following;

  • Consideration of whole life and embodied carbon
  • Biodiversity net gain and regenerative design
  • Tackling fuel poverty
  • Provision for active and sustainable travel
  • Creation of strong inclusive communities
  • Creation of accessible, safe spaces for different user groups
  • Contributing to the circular economy through conservation and retrofit

Smith Scott Mullan were novated to Cruden to prepare the building warrant and construction information for the affordable housing. They worked closely with our development team who were designing the adjacent housing for sale. This involved detailed coordination of the innovative street design across both phases. They actively engaged in practical construction solutions to meet the Eco-Homes Excellent requirement.
